Winter Mountaineering in Scotland

THE TORRIDON MOUNTAINS ~ Winter Walking or Mountaineering Weekend

from £280

This is a two day version of our 5 day Winter Mountaineering or walking trip and is a good introduction to winter walking and mountaineering. There are two versions of this weekend to suit all abilities : Mountaineering - involving roped, technical ground , or , Hillwalking - walking to summits only. You do not need to have used crampons previously as there is training built in. We also have a winter skills weekend for the less experienced and our 5 day mountaineering trip allows more time to train and progress. You can pack a lot into two days with our expert guidance and it's even possible to get to us via Inverness airport, from anywhere in the UK, have a great weekend in the mountains and be back home refreshed and fulfilled.

Testimonials

"great blast of a weekend. Can't put into words how good this is. Proper mountaineering and sorry to leave so soon. Kept sane back at my desk with a picture of us all on a summit as my computer wallpaper. Highly recommended and worth the effort." John Richardson

Torridon Mountaineering Weekend

If you’ve found Mountain and Sea Guides then look no further. We were lucky enough to have Mike guide us through the jaw-droppping Torridon mountains on a two-day skills course. We had to postpone it several times due to lockdowns but it was worth the wait and I am glad we held our booking. Mike was constantly assessing the weather and telling us of the signs around that indicated what was happening and would be likely to happen and his patience in waiting for everyone to grasp the subject matter or to catch up if lagging behind was incredible. We are all experienced hill walkers in England and Wales but this terrain was new to us. Add to that, what we knew of how to navigate and read the situation was rusty at best, but Mike sharpened us up and encouraged us to revisit the skills when we were next in the mountains and snow in order to stay well-grounded and, ultimately, safe. Everything he explained was done so in a very pure and simple manner showing his 35 years of being a mountain skills trainer and with every consideration for his audience. We went over multi-person rope techniques for ascending and descending on snow and ice, how to self-arrest on a snow pack (as a last resort!) and gauging the conditions when using crampons including if you should even be on the mountain. We also did some micro-navigation which I had practically forgotten so feel much more confident of getting out of a jam if ever I am in one. Mike was also just a really good bloke and happy to talk about anything as we were driving between Lochcarron and the start of the course in Torridon. I can’t thank Mike and Lyndsey enough for their effort in putting on the course and excellent communication. It'll love long in the memory and I can’t recommend them highly enough. We will be booking up again to do a trip to Skye and hopefully some summer sea kayaking. Superb.

Trip Description

Get to us on the friday night and we'll be straight up the mountain on Saturday.

This weekend is essentially a chance for anyone to make good use of time without using up too much of that annual leave.

Route choices will be appropriate to what the conditions safely allow and our main aim will be to tackle the exciting grade I or II aretes, pinnacles and winter scrambles in the area on the mountaineering option or basic hillwalking on the walking option - see price details.

Within the scope of the weekend routes will be chosen depending on which format you are on:

Mountaineering : The Liathach traverse, the Black Carl pinnacles, the Northern pinnacles of Mullach an Rathain to name a few.

Hillwalking : Ascents of Mullach an Rathain or Spidean a Choire Leith (On Liathach), Tom na Gruagaich and Sgurr Mhor (Bein Alligin), Spidean Choire nan Clach or Ruadh Stac Mhor (Bein Eighe)

They're big, snowy and very alpine in stature a famously dubbed the most mountainous part of Scotland.

The Torridon mountains have a character and presence which draws people to them time after time.

Our approach to guiding on these peaks is all about allowing you to achieve your goals safely while developing your skills along the way.

Based in Lochcarron, halfway between the Torridon and Kintail mountains,  we are in the best location for taking advantage of routes in the mountains of Wester Ross

The combination of mountain views alongside stunning sea lochs and islands will make you leave here wanting to explore more.

Take a look at our five day long winter mountaineering Torridon ridges and gullies trip, or hillwalking format,  for a comprehensive experience with more time to explore this wonderful area.

Get in touch and we can advise you on how to get here for an memorable weekend.
